    v1.3 transport 150

Motorized road transport has increased rapidly in the European Region in the last decades. The European Union forecasts show a further rise in passenger and freight transport until 2020.

Transport-related health effects can be direct (injuries) and indirect (through air pollution, noise and climate change related to emissions from traffic, and through reduced physical activity).

Road traffic injuries are a major public health problem. In the European Region, they are the main cause of death among young people, especially males, and a major cause of physical disability, especially among the youngest. The total cost to society is enormous in terms of economic loss as well as of quality of life.

The increase in motorized transport is also an important factor in the reduction of physical activity, such as for example walking and cycling. Low levels of physical activity contribute to the ongoing epidemic of overweight and obesity.

Mobility and transport policy in the pan-European Region: information and assessment

The indicators below describe pressure, exposure, health effects and action for the issue under scrutiny. Indicator-based assessments cover all countries in the WHO European Region and provide information on the environment and health context, the policy relevance and context, as well as suggestions for further monitoring. When available, case studies of health impact assessment (HIA) are also presented.

These indicators can be used to monitor the achievement of the environmental and health goals for the pan-European Region (so called regional priority goals, RPGs) set by the Fourth Ministerial Conference on Environment and Health in 2004, and on which the 53 Member States of WHO/Europe have committed to take action.

For proper interpretation of these indicators, please read the metadata which are presented on the indicator assessment pages and read the information on indicator methodology.
